Tezos FAQs - Learn more about XTZ

TTezos FAQ - Learn more about XTZTEverything you need to know about Tezos (XTZ) inside of Exodus.

In this article:

Why does Tezos (XTZ) have a minimum balance?

Tezos is a special asset that has built-in rules on minimum balances held in Tezos addresses, just like some bank accounts where you have to maintain a minimum balance. In order to activate and use your Tezos wallet, you must first deposit no less than 0.275 XTZ into your Exodus Tezos address.

After that, your account will activate and everything will be just like you are used to with Bitcoin, Ethereum or any other Exodus asset, except that the 0.275 XTZ minimum cannot be moved out.

What is the Tezos official stance?

The XTZ asset is unique in that, unlike other assets, Tezos enforces reserve requirements in order to keep the address active as well as protect the shared global ledger from growing excessively large as the result of spam or malicious usage.

The Tezos network requires minimum balances on accounts in order to prevent people from overwhelming the network.

To submit transactions, an address must hold a minimum amount of XTZ in the shared global ledger. You cannot send this XTZ to other addresses. To fund a new address, you must send enough XTZ to meet the reserve requirement.

The current minimum reserve requirement is 0.275 XTZ. This is the cost of an address that owns no other objects in the ledger.

You can read more information on the Tezos reserve requirements in the official documentation.

How does Exodus handle XTZ minimum balances?

Similar to how Exodus requires a minimum Ethereum balance to exchange ERC20 tokens, Exodus also requires a small amount of XTZ to be stored in your wallet to remain in compliance with the Tezos enforced reserve requirements.

By default, a minimum balance of 0.275 XTZ is required. If your XTZ address in Exodus has less than this minimum balance, this warning is displayed in the upper right-hand corner of Exodus when viewing your Tezos XTZ wallet:

Please note that you will not be able to send XTZ while the balance in your Exodus wallet remains below 0.275 XTZ.

When using our in-app exchanging feature from other assets for XTZ, Exodus will always make sure that you will receive more than 0.275 XTZ to ensure these account minimums are covered.

Is it possible to return the minimum balance so I can send it out?

Currently, there is no way to send out the minimum balance from your Exodus wallet. It must be maintained and locked into your wallet forever. This is not specific to Exodus but is a requirement of the Tezos blockchain.
