Polygon network troubleshooting

Common issues with your MATIC tokens inside of Exodus wallet and how to fix them.

In this article:

How is it possible to send to the wrong address?

MATIC is a unique asset in the fact that the project behind it, Polygon, is designing it to be a layer 2 solution to blockchains.

What this means is that the Polygon MATIC network is going to help scale, secure, and offer a way to easily connect what it calls basechains. Ethereum is the first basechain that the Polygon MATIC network supports and therefore the MATIC ERC20 token will always exist alongside the MATIC Mainnet asset. The Polygon MATIC protocol will then ensure that different compatible basechains can then also interact with Ethereum and each other in an easier way with the introduction of the Polygon MATIC Mainnet Network.

Exodus supports Polygon (MATIC) on the Ethereum network and the MATIC network. In order to see your mainnet MATIC, you can enable your Polygon wallet on the MATIC network following the steps in this guide: How do I enable/disable assets in Exodus?

Any other MATIC tokens won't show in your wallet, but please do not worry! This article will show how you can retrieve any mainnet MATIC tokens sent to your Exodus wallet.

How do I recover my Polygon MATIC tokens sent to my Exodus MATIC address?

MATIC token sent to Exodus Desktop

Retrieving your Polygon MATIC tokens will require the use of a desktop computer and MetaMask.

1
Go to MetaMask's website and download the MetaMask wallet.
2
In your Exodus wallet, open the asset wallet that you accidentally sent your MATIC token to.
3
Please export the private key from the wallet inside of Exodus. Here's how you can obtain your private key: How do I view my private keys?
4
Open MetaMask and import your private key by clicking on Import Account.
5
After importing your private key, a) click on Ethereum Mainnet at the top of the MetaMask wallet screen and b) select Add Network.

6
Your browser will open a new tab in which you can copy and paste these details in the relevant sections:
a) Network Name: MATIC Mainnet
b) RPC: https://polygon-rpc.com/
c) ChainID: 137
d) Symbol: MATIC
e) Block Explorer: https://explorer.matic.network

Then click Save.

Please note: After submitting the RPC URL if you see an error that prompts that the 'Chain ID' is incorrect. You can fix this by choosing an alternative RPC URL from one of the others that are listed by the Polygon network here.

7
Now please open MetaMask and go to the bottom and click on Import tokens.

8
After you click on Import tokens you will see you need to find the Token Contract Address. To find the contract address all you need to do is:
  1. Open the Polygon MATIC token list and find the asset you accidentally sent to and click on it.
  2. Under Profile Summary in the top right you will see Contract, please copy the contract address.

9
Now back in MetaMask just paste in the contract address (the rest of the information should appear by itself). Then click Add Custom Token.

You should now see your Polygon MATIC tokens appear, just click Import Tokens.

10

Finally, send your tokens back to the address where you originally sent them from.

Please note: You'll need some MATIC on the Polygon network in the wallet before you can send the tokens back. You can use this Coinmarketcap list to find where to purchase some.

Your Polygon MATIC tokens will now show in your MetaMask wallet, and you are then able to send them to a platform that supports Polygon MATIC tokens.

MATIC token sent to Exodus Mobile

To retrieve your Polygon MATIC tokens will require the use of a desktop computer and MetaMask.

1
First, you'll need to download the Desktop version of Exodus here.
2
Next, write down your mobile wallet's 12-word secret recovery phrase. To find this, please see this guide.

Please note: These 12-words are your master key for your wallet. It is incredibly important for you to keep your 12-word phrase safe as it is the only way to recover your funds should something happen to your wallet. Please see our article Everything you need to know about your 12-word secret recovery phrase for tips on keeping your 12-word phrase safe.

3
Now you will need to restore your mobile wallet to the desktop wallet you just downloaded. To do this, please read this guide.
4
The rest of the instructions are the same as above in the MATIC token sent to Exodus Desktop section.

If you do not have access to a trusted computer, you can retrieve your Polygon network MATIC tokens with your 12-word secret recovery phrase and the MetaMask mobile app.

Please note: This process is not recommended unless you do not have a trusted desktop computer, as it exposes your Exodus 12-word secret recovery phrase. Desktop methods only use the private key of one asset, which is far more secure. You can read more about the risks of using your 12-word secret recovery phrase here: Using the secret 12-word secret recovery phrase.

1
Go to MetaMask's website and install the mobile MetaMask wallet. Tap on Import using Secret Recovery Phrase.

2
Enter your Exodus 12-word secret recovery phrase with a space between each word. Set a strong password and tap Import.

3
Next, tap the three bars at the top left of your screen.

4
Tap Settings.

5
Tap Networks.

6
Tap the Add Network button.

7
Then, copy and paste these details in the relevant sections:
a) Network Name: Polygon mainnet
b) RPC: https://polygon-rpc.com/
c) ChainID: 137
d) Symbol: MATIC
e) Block Explorer: https://explorer.matic.network/

Then tap Add.
8
And that is it! Your mainnet MATIC asset will show in your MetaMask wallet, and you are then able to send them to a platform that supports the mainnet MATIC asset.

MATIC token sent to Trezor

To retrieve your MATIC tokens will require the use of your Trezor hardware wallet, a desktop computer, and MetaMask, but it only takes a few minutes!

1
Go to MetaMask's website and download the MetaMask wallet.
2
Then, you'll need to connect your Trezor device to MetaMask using this official guide.
3

Please note: In the Select an Account screen, please select the ETH address you sent your MATIC token to. Most of the time it will be the first account.

4
The rest of the instructions are the same as above. Please start at Step 5 in the Polygon MATIC token sent to Exodus Desktop section.
