Optimism network troubleshooting

Common issues with sending tokens on the Optimism network and how to fix them.

In this article:

How is it possible to send to the wrong address?

Optimism is an Ethereum (ETH) layer 2 scaling solution. At the moment, Exodus does not support the Optimism network.

What this means is that it is possible to accidentally choose the Optimism network when withdrawing assets to your Exodus wallet address, even though we don't currently support the Optimism network.

If you have sent funds from an exchange service or wallet using the Optimism network, you will require the use of a desktop computer and MetaMask to retrieve your assets.

How do I recover tokens sent using the Optimism network?

Tutorial video: MetaMask recovery guide

You will need the Optimism RPC details when adding Optimism as a custom network to MetaMask. You can find the Optimism RPC details here: Optimism RPC

Token sent to Exodus Desktop

1
Go to MetaMask's website and download the MetaMask wallet.
2
Open your Exodus wallet and open the asset wallet that you accidentally sent the funds to over the Optimism network.
3
Next, you will need to export the private key from the wallet inside of Exodus. Here's how you can obtain your private key: How do I view my private keys?

Please be very careful with your 12-word secret recovery phrase and private keys, because they control access to your funds. Never share them with anyone, and only import them into platforms that you trust 100%. If you choose to import your 12-word phrase or private keys into a third-party platform, you do so at your own risk. To find out more, check out this article from our Knowledge Base: How do I keep my money safe?

4
Open MetaMask and import your private key by clicking on Import Account.
5
After importing your private key, a) click on Ethereum Mainnet at the top of the MetaMask wallet screen and b) select Add Network.

6
Your browser will open a new tab in which you can copy and paste these details in the relevant sections:
a) Network Name: Optimism
b) RPC: https://mainnet.optimism.io
c) ChainID: 10
d) Symbol: ETH
e) Block Explorer: https://optimistic.etherscan.io/

Then click Save.
7
If you sent ETH over the Optimism network, it should now appear in your MetaMask wallet. However, if you sent a different Optimism token you will need to go to the bottom of the MetaMask wallet and click on Import tokens.

8
After you click on Import tokens you will see you need to find the Token Contract Address. To find the contract address all you need to do is:
  1. Open the Optimism token list, find the token you accidentally sent, and click on it.
  2. Under Profile Summary in the top right you will see Contract, please copy the contract address.

9
Next, back in MetaMask, paste in the contract address and the rest of the information should appear by itself. Then click Add Custom Token.

You should now see your tokens appear, click Import Tokens.

10

Finally, send your tokens back to the original address where you sent them from!

You'll need some Ethereum (ETH) on the Optimism network in the wallet before moving your funds out of MetaMask.

Token sent to Exodus Mobile

To retrieve your assets sent on the Optimism network you will require the use of a desktop computer and MetaMask.

1
First, you'll need to download the Desktop version of Exodus here.
2
Next, write down your Mobile wallet's 12-word secret recovery phrase. To find this, please see this guide.

These 12-words are your master key for your wallet. It is incredibly important for you to keep your 12-word phrase safe as it is the only way to recover your funds should something happen to your wallet. To learn more about the 12-word phrase, visit: Everything you need to know about your 12-word secret recovery phrase

3
Now you will need to restore your Mobile wallet to the Desktop wallet you just downloaded. To do this, please read this guide.
4
The rest of the instructions are the same as above in the token sent to Exodus Desktop on Optimism network section.

If you do not have access to a trusted computer, you can retrieve your Optimism tokens with your 12-word secret recovery phrase and the MetaMask mobile app.

Please be very careful with your 12-word secret recovery phrase and private keys, because they control access to your funds. Never share them with anyone, and only import them into platforms that you trust 100%. Token sent to Trezor

To retrieve your assets will require the use of a desktop computer and MetaMask, but it only takes a few minutes!

Never connect your Trezor to a wallet that you don't trust. Always do your own research before connecting your Trezor with a third-party platform. If you connect your Trezor to a third-party platform, you do so at your own risk. To learn more, visit: How do I keep my money safe?

1
Go to MetaMask's website and download the MetaMask wallet.
2
Next, you will need to connect your Trezor to MetaMask using this official guide.
3
On the Select an Account screen, a) select the address you sent the unsupported tokens to. Most of the time it will be the first account. Then b) click  Unlock.

4
The rest of the instructions are the same as above. Please start at Step 5 in the token sent to Exodus Desktop on Optimism network section.
