What is Ethereum staking?

You can stake Ethereum (ETH) and claim ETH staking rewards in Exodus Mobile.

By staking your ETH, you actively support the Ethereum network by allocating resources to it, thus contributing to its stability and decentralization. In return, you earn ETH as a reward.

In Exodus, staking ETH means you agree to lock up an amount of ETH for a time, during which you can't send or swap it.

A minimum of 0.1 ETH is required to start staking.

After staking, it takes approximately 5 days before you start earning rewards. Your staked ETH will earn rewards daily, and earned rewards will automatically be restaked, which means you will also earn rewards on previously earned rewards.

To stake ETH from a self-custody wallet, you can download Exodus Mobile.

Ethereum (ETH) staking FAQs

Answers to frequently asked questions about staking Ethereum (ETH).

What happens when I stake my ETH?

When you stake your ETH, you're delegating your ETH to a validator. This means you vote for and signal your trust in the validator.

Validators earn rewards by maintaining and securing the Ethereum network. Rewards are distributed proportionally to everyone who delegated (staked) ETH to the validator.

If you would like an in-depth explanation of how ETH staking works, read the Ethereum team's official documentation here: Ethereum: Proof-of-stake (PoS).

Is staking ETH safe?

Staking your ETH is done in a self-custodial way in Exodus.

Your ETH is staked through the use of smart contracts. Only you have the control to withdraw your staked ETH and rewards from the smart contract.

In addition, both ChainSecurity and Ackee have performed security audits, which you can find here:

If you decide to stop staking ETH, you can unstake it anytime. The unstaking process takes up to 10 days, after which you claim your unstaked ETH to return it to your wallet.

How does ETH staking work?

Every time you choose to stake ETH, you need to stake a minimum of 0.1 ETH. If you have ETH staked and wish to stake additional funds, you will need to stake a minimum of 0.1 ETH again.

After staking your ETH, it takes approximately 5 days before you will start earning rewards.

This timeframe is so our third-party staking API provider, Everstake, can collect enough staked funds to make up a staking pool. Each staking pool requires 32 ETH, an amount set by the Ethereum network. This is why ETH staking times can vary.

You can read more about why 32 ETH is required on the Ethereum.org website: Pooled staking.

Once staked, your ETH will earn rewards daily. Your rewards will be automatically restaked and added to your staked balance.

While staking is active, you can only send and swap ETH that isn't staked.

Which validator will I be delegating my funds to?

When you stake your ETH in Exodus, you will support our third-party staking API provider Everstake.

Everstake has a comprehensive guide on how they manage ETH staking, which you can read here: Non-custodial Ethereum staking.

How much can I earn from staking ETH?

To learn more about Annual Percentage Yield (APY), please visit: What is APY?

In Exodus Mobile, you can see the approximate Annual Percentage Yield and your current Earnings in the staking section of your ETH wallet.

Does Exodus charge a fee to stake ETH?

No, Exodus does not charge a fee to stake ETH.

However, there are a few Ethereum network fees when staking ETH. 100% of these fees go to the Ethereum network. They are paid in Ethereum (ETH).

Stake transaction fee:

  • The transaction fee for sending the delegation transaction when you stake your ETH

Unstake transaction fee:

  • The transaction fee for unstaking your ETH

Claim unstaked ETH transaction fee:

  • The transaction fee for claiming unstaked ETH after the 10-day unstaking period

To learn more about network fees, please visit: What are transaction fees?

What is the minimum amount I need to start staking?

The minimum amount you can stake is 0.1 ETH.

Each time you want to stake more, you must also stake at least 0.1 ETH.

Each time you stake ETH, you will also need some ETH to pay the stake transaction fee.

When will I start earning rewards?

When you decide to stake your ETH, you will need to wait approximately 5 days for your funds to become staked and start earning rewards. In some cases, it could take longer.

Staking times can vary because Everstake, our third-party staking API provider, has to collect staked funds until there is enough for a staking pool. Each staking pool requires 32 ETH, an amount set by the Ethereum network.

Once your ETH is staked, your earned rewards will update on a daily basis, so you will continue to see gradual increases over time.

While your funds are staking, in your ETH staking section, you will see an estimate of when your ETH will be staked. Once your ETH is staked, you will start earning rewards.

Once your funds are staked, you can view your earnings in your ETH wallet's Stake section: How do I see my ETH rewards?

Do I need to claim my ETH rewards?

You do not need to claim your ETH rewards manually.

Your earned rewards will automatically accrue and increase daily. Earned rewards will automatically be restaked without additional fees.

To send or exchange your ETH rewards, you need to unstake your ETH.

How long until my ETH finishes unstaking?

To unstake, your staked ETH must have started to accrue rewards. ETH usually takes up to 10 days to unstake. You can see the unstaking progress in your ETH staking section.

Once unstaking is complete, you need to claim your unstaked ETH to your wallet.
